Day 4: Yellowstone National Park

The Wild Rose Ranch may look cut but it’s not so good after all: it’s very loud (thanks to the paper-thin walls), the people working at the front desk/store are often clueless and unhelpful, and the wireless doesn’t work. On top of that, the towels we got were very rough, and we had a coffee machine, coffee, but no cups in the room (am I supposed to drink from the coffee maker?).

So, lots of potential, definitively not well utilized.

Also, it was raining this morning, which made our visit to Yellowstone a bit more difficult – and affected our mood a bit.

We Yelped our breakfast spot (bad idea!) and we ended up at the super-highly rated “Woodside Bakery” in the town of West Yellowstone. The baked gods were decent (I had a homemade cinnamon roll), but no wifi, no restroom, and bad service made it not so worth it. Thankfully, we found a nice spot right after that, “Ernie’s Bakey,” where we bought some sandwiches for the day at Yellowstone and we found great free wifi. After another coffee (you can never have too many when you travel this much), we headed toward Yellowstone.

 

 

Yellowstone Park was immense, diverse, and interesting. I liked Bryce Canyon more, but Yellowstone’s geysers were something very new and different for me. I loved the bare landscapes, where boiling water, geysers, brightly colored rocks, torn trees, and narrow pedestrian trails formed a maze of alien beauty.

 

 

We didn’t meet a lot of wildlife, but we also didn’t leave the beaten path (which is illegal here and could get you killed). We didn’t have too much time, and Yellowstone is enormous, so we decided to stay on the Western side; we drove down to the Lower, Middle, and finally Higher Geyser Basin, until we got to the world-famous “Old Faithful” geyser.

There, we stopped for lunch and we did some souvenir-shopping at the numerous stores around the area. Then we slowly started to circle around the Old Faithful, waiting for it to erupt (it does so every 1.5 hours).

True to its name, the Old Faithful shot up a huge column of water shortly after, and it was indeed impressive – also it lasted way longer than I expected! 

 

 

Finally, we walked one of the trails to go see the “Morning Glory,” a hot water pool with gorgeous colors. 

Tired but satisfied, we then made our way back to the car and drove back to West Yellowstone. We stopped at the “Slippery Otter Pub,” where I got a bison burger (yummy!) and a delicious huckleberry and honey hefeweizen season beer. I am developing a taste for beer, apparently!

 

All in all, this was a good day. Minor inconveniences, but the park was worth it and I definitively want to come back (but not to the Wild Rose Ranch!).

States travelled so far: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Not bad for 4 days.

Notes for the future: wifi and cell phone signal in this part of the US is awful.

Tomorrow the LONG drive to Mount Rushmore through Montana and Wyoming!

Giorno 4: Yellowstone National Park

Il Wild Rose Ranch poteva anche sembrare carino, ma non lo e`: e` troppo rumoroso (grazie alle pareti di cartone), le persone alla "reception"/negozio sono spesso inutili e un po' disinteressate, e il wireless non funziona. Oltre a cio`, gli asciugamani della camera erano ruvidi e di bassa qualita`, e sebbene ci fosse una macchina per il caffe`, mancavano le tazze!

Cosi` tanto potenziale, sprecato! =/

Inoltre, stamattina diluviava, il che ha reso la nostra visita a Yellowstone un po' difficile, e ci ha abbassato il morale. Abbiamo usato Yelp di nuovo per trovare un posto per fare colazione (pessima idea, ma stiamo imparando eh...) e siamo finiti nel posto in teoria migliore nella cittadina di West Yellowstone, la "Woodside Bakery." Le paste erano anche decenti (io ho preso un cinnamon roll fatto in casa), ma non c'era ne` wifi ne` bagno, e i ragazzi dietro il bancone non erano molto simpatici - peccato. 

Per fortuna, abbiamo trovato un gran bel posto subito dopo - a riprova del fatto che Yelp non vale un cavolo, fuori dalle grandi citta` - "Ernie's Bakery", dove abbiamo preso un paio di sandwich per il pranzo nel parco e abbiamo usato il wifi gratuito (hurra`!). Dopo un altro caffe` (non si puo` mai bere abbastanza caffe` quando si viaggia cosi` tanto), ci siamo diretti verso Yellowstone.

    

       

Il parco di Yellowstone era immenso, vario, e molto interessante. Mi e` piaciuto di piu` il Bryce Canyon, ma i geyser di yellowstone erano qualcosa di completamente nuovo e diverso, per me. Ho amato moltissimo il paesaggio spoglio, dove acqua bollente, geyser, rocce dai colori vividi, alberi secchi e cortorti, e stretti passaggi pedonali in legno formavano labirinti di aliena bellezza. 

      

     

Non abbiamo incontrato molti animali selvatici (sebbene ci siano lupi, orsi Grizzly, eccetera), ma e` vero anche che non ci siamo allontanati dal sentiero battuto (che qui e` vietato, e potrebbe rivelarsi fatale). Non avevamo tantissimo tempo, e Yellowstone e` enorme, quindi abbiamo deciso di stare nel lato a ovest; abbiamo guidato dal Bacino dei Geyser Basso, a quello Centrale e poi Alto, fino all'"Old Faithful," un geyser gigante e famoso in tutto il mondo. 

La` ci siamo fermati per pranzare e per comprare alcuni souvenir nei numerosi negozietti della zona. Poi abbiamo cominciato a girare attorno all'Old Faithful lentamente, aspettando che eruttasse (il che succede piu` o meno ogni ora e mezzo). 

Facendo onore al proprio nome, l'Old Faithful (= il "vecchio fedele") ha spruzzato una grande colonna d'acqua poco dopo - il fenomeno e` davvero incredibile, e dura molto di piu` di quanto mi aspettassi!

      

        

Infine, abbiamo camminato su uno dei passaggi pedonali per andare ad ammirare il "Morning Glory," una pozza di acqua bollente dai colori splendidi.

Stanchi ma soddisfatti, ci siamo diretti alla macchina e poi siamo tornati a West Yellowstone. Ci siamo fermati al "Slippery Otter Pub" (=il "Pub della Lontra Scivolosa", un nome che e` tutto un programma), dove io ho gustato un ottimo hamburger di bisonte (buono!) e una deliziosa birra locale hefeweizen con miele e huckleberry. Sto finalmente svilluppando una passione per la birra!

 

In generale, e` stata una bella giornata. Alcuni piccoli inconvenienti, ma il parco e` valso la pena di guidare fino qui, e ho sicuramente voglia di tornare (ma non al Wild Rose Ranch!)

Stati visitati finora: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Non male, in quattro giorni.

Nota per il futuro: il segnale wifi e telefonico in questa parte degli Stati Uniti fa veramente schifo.

Domani il lungo viaggio verso Mount Rushmore attraverso il Montana, il Wyoming, e il South Dakota!
