Day 5: Driving through the Northern US

Today we spent the whole day driving through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and finally South Dakota. We started near the Western part of Yellowstone and arrived at Hill City, SD (near Mount Rushmore) in the evening.

We didn’t stop very often, in fact just once, in Billings, Montana, for lunch. In Billings, a city with an incredible amount of local breweries (our waiter proudly claimed that Montana has the highest number of breweries per capita, given their small population), we ended up at a cool looking bar called “Uberbrew”. There I tried a delicious local Hefeweizen beer, and a salad with candied almonds, cranberries, and spinach, with grilled tuna and a yummy strawberry vinaigrette.

 

 

After some coffee, we were back on the road.

So what did we see while driving over 600 miles through the Northern United States?

Surprisingly, not many cows, horses, or cultivated fields – which I expected.

Instead, we saw lots of open fields, where the landscape is completely empty from horizon to horizon, as far as the eye can see. We drove through a lot of rain, some thunder and lightning, and a few beautiful rainbows. We spotted many power plants (coal based) and railways, lots of mountains in the distance, and dozens of towns with less than 1,000 inhabitants. We also saw many ranches and some balls of hay.

When we arrived in Hill City, SD, we immediately noticed that there were a lot of motorcycles and bikers – too many, in fact. Then we saw that the main street was blocked off and open to “motorcycles only” – which made it a bit difficult to get to our motel. As we finally got there and checked in, we found out that during the first week of August, the whole area is swarmed by bikers for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which explained the road closure, the overwhelming number of motorcycles around, and the unusually high price of the Super8 Motel we stayed at. Unfortunately we didn’t know about this, or we could have caught the various concerts in these days: Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd... Damn it.

We went out for a late dinner in the charming town of Hill City, in a small cafe called “Hill City Cafe” – where I got soup bean and ham soup, and then coffee and cherry pie (pies are fabulous in this part of the country).

 

Interesting day overall – tomorrow Mt. Rushmore for some US history!

Giorno 5: Guidando attraverso gli Stati Uniti del nord

Ogg abbiamo speso tutto il giorno a guidare attraverso l'Idaho, il Montana, il Wyoming, e infine il Sud Dakota. Siamo partiti dalla parte piu` a ovest del parco di Yellostone e siamo arrivati a Hill City, SD (vicino a Mount Rushmore) a sera inoltrata.

 

Non ci siamo fermati molto spesso, infatti solo una volta, a Billings (Montana) per pranzo. A Billings, citta` con un numero incredibile di birrifici locali (il nostro cameriere ha orgogliosamente dichiarato che il Montana ha il piu` alto numero di birrifici procapite, data la popolazione molto ridotta), siamo finiti in un bar molto 'cool' chiamato "Uberbrew". Li` ho provato una birra Hefeweizen locale, deliziosa, e un'insalata con mandorle tostate e caramellate, cranberries, foglie di spinaci, tonno alla griglia e una buonissima vinaigrette alla fragola. 

 

 

Dopo un altra dose di caffe`, siamo ripartiti.

E quindi, cosa abbiamo visto in queste 600 e piu` miglia di strada attraverso gli Stati Uniti del nord?

Sorprendentemente, non molte mucche, cavalli, o campi coltivati - che invece mi aspettavo. 

Invece, abbiamo visto molti campi aperti, dove il paesaggio e` completamente vuoto da orizzonte a orizzonte, fino a che l'occhio puo` vedere (ora capisco per le chiamano "grandi pianure"). Abbiamo guidato con molta pioggia, alcuni tuoni e lampi, e qualche bell'arcobaleno. Abbiamo notato un sacco di centrali elettriche (a carbone) e ferrovie (solo di merci), molte montagne in lontananza, e dozzine di piccoli paesi con meno di 1.000 abitanti. Abbiamo anche visto molti ranch e alcune balle di fieno. 

 

 

Quando siamo finalmente arrivati a Hill City, SD, abbiamo subito notato che c'erano un sacco di motociclisti - troppi, in effetti. Poi abbiamo visto che la strada principale del paese era bloccata al traffico e aperta "solo alle motociclette" - il che ha reso arrivare al motel un po' ostico. Quando poi abbiamo fatto il check-in, abbiamo scoperto che durante la prima settimana di agosto, tutta la zona circostante e` presa d'assalto dai bikers per il convegno annuale "Sturgis Motorcycle Rally", il che spiegava la chiusura delle strade, il numero assurdo di motociclisti nei dintorni, e il prezzo troppo alto del Motel Super8 (che di solito e` molto economico). Purtroppo non ne sapevamo nulla, o avremmo potuto assistere ai vari concerti che si erano tenuti in questi giorni: Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd... Porca miseria.

Siamo usciti per una tarda cena nel piccolo paese di Hill City, in un piccolo cafe chiamato "Hill CIty Cafe" - io ho preso una zuppa di fagioli e prosciutto, e poi caffe` e crostata di ciliegie (le crostate in questa parte degli Stati Uniti sono favolose). 

 

Giornata interessante in complesso - domani Mount Rushmore e un po' di storia americana!
