Today was mostly spent
driving through South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and finally Illinois. We
drove for 9 hours and it felt really long; we are starting to feel the fatigue
of this insanely long road trip.
Minnesota was a bit
boring: open fields, and then open fields, and then more open fields. To
Minnesota’s credit, we only drove through the southernmost part – I am sure
there are beautiful places up north and by the lakes – we just didn’t see them.
Wisconsin was better: we crossed the Mississippi river and then there were so many rivers and little lakes, and the names of the different
towns or natural landmarks were so strange that we had fun trying to pronounce
them!
Case in point:
Oconomowoc! Then we also found Sparta(aaaa!), WI, and went near Madison (but
not inside, we had no time).
When we crossed into
Illinois, it was already late afternoon.
We got off the I-94 and arrived in Northbrook, IL – what a cute little
town! So homey, clean, and adorable!
We quickly arrived at
the Van Treeck’s family house. We decided to stay with my friend Michayla’s
parents instead of getting a hotel in Chicago, and it was a great idea. The Van
Treecks are kind-hearted, fun, and all-around great people! They welcomed us
very warmly, and Michael (the dad) cooked us a fabulous dinner. He has trained
as a cook in the past, and this was easily the best dinner we’ve had during
this trip.
Megan, the mother, and
John, Michayla’s brother, were very nice and we ended up chatting until very
late. What a fun and truly appreciated break from driving from hotel to hotel!

agosto
Oggi abbiamo
passato la maggior parte del tempo guidando attraverso il Sud Dakota, il
Minnesota, il Wisconsin, e infine l’Illinois. Abbiamo guidato per 9 ore con
poche pause ed è sembrato davvero molto lungo. Cominciamo a sentire la fatica
di questo viaggio assurdamente lungo.
Il Minnesota era
un po’ noioso: campi, campi, e poi ancora campi (non coltivati). Ad essere corretti, si dovrebbe ricordare che
noi abbiamo visto solo la parte più a sud dello stato – sono certa che ci sono
posti meravigliosi più a nord, ma noi non li abbiamo potuti visitare.
Il Wisconsin era
molto meglio: abbiamo attraversato il Mississippi, e poi c’erano moltissimi fiumi e piccoli laghi, e i nomi delle diverse
ciità o bellezze naturali erano così strani che ci siamo divertiti a cercare di
pronunciarli! Un esempio: Oconomowoc! Poi abbiamo anche trovato Sparta(aaaa!),
WI, e siamo passati vicino a Madison.
Quando siamo
entrati in Illinois, era già tardo pomeriggio. Siamo usciti dall’autostrada
I-94 e siamo arrivati a Northbrook, IL – una cittadina carinissima,
accogliente, pulita, e organizzata.
Ci siamo diretti
verso la casa della famiglia Van Treeck, poiché avevamo deciso di evitare un hotel a
Chicago e invece stare con i genitori della mia cara amica Michayla. Un’ottima
idea! I Van Treeck sono persone generose, simpatiche, e in generale davvero
fantastiche. Ci hanno accolto con molto calore, e Michael (il padre) ci ha
cucinato una cena favolosa. Ha studiato come cuoco in passato, e il cibo che ci
ha preparato era sicuramente il miglior pasto di tutto il viaggio: salmone,
insalata di quinoa, verdure... wow.
Megan, la madre,
e John, il fratello di Michayla, erano molto gentili e divertenti, e abbiamo finito
per chiacchierare fino a tardi. È stato davvero un piacevole diversivo da tutti
i motel in cui siamo stati finora!
